Sneaker Care Tips

Taking care of sneakers is essential, especially when they form a prized collection that you don’t wear often. Although I love my sneaker collection, I find myself wearing my Crocs the most for everyday activities. This helps me preserve my favorite pairs in near-mint condition. To keep sneakers looking as fresh as possible, the right cleaning techniques make a big difference. Using a soft brush or an old toothbrush along with a mild cleaning solution is perfect for cleaning the soles and the upper part without causing damage.

Water damage can be a sneaker’s worst enemy, so I make sure to apply a waterproof spray designed for either fabric or leather, depending on the shoe. If sneakers get wet, letting them air-dry naturally—away from direct heat—is key to avoiding material warping or color fading. Storage is another crucial part of sneaker care. I always keep mine in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight to prevent any discoloration. To avoid creases, using shoe trees or stuffing the shoes with tissue paper works wonders.

Rotating shoes is important too, which, in my case, is easy since I wear my Crocs most of the time—giving my Jordans ample time to breathe between wears. For my white sneakers, I make it a habit to wipe them down with a damp cloth after each use and touch them up with white shoe polish to maintain their crisp look. My suede sneakers get special attention; I only use a suede brush to clean them and always apply a suede protector spray to guard against damage.

Dealing with scuffs or scratches is part of the maintenance routine, especially on leather pairs. A magic eraser works well for surface scuffs, while a tiny bit of petroleum jelly or leather conditioner can help buff out deeper marks. I also make sure to remove and wash my laces separately to prevent any discoloration and replace them when they look too worn. Finally, for collector’s items or high-value sneakers, I sometimes add sole protectors to keep them pristine and avoid walking on rough surfaces. By following these tips, my sneakers stay looking as good as new—even if they rarely make it out of the house.

  1. This helps me so much. I usually wear slides or a running shoe because I don't want to mess up my shoes. I always check the weather just in case my shoes could get messed up in the weather. I also never thought of the temperature of where to keep my shoes. Great advice all around!
